Romans 5:6 says: "While we were still helpless [powerless to provide for our salvation], at the right time Christ died [as a substitute] for the ungodly." (AMP) Verse 8 of the same chapter echoes: "But God clearly shows and proves His own love for us, by the fact that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us." (AMP) And then we skip down to verse 10 which affirms: "For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, it is much more certain, having been reconciled, that we will be saved [from the consequences of sin] by His life [that is, we will be saved because Christ lives today]." Saved from God's wrath. Why? Because Jesus bore it! Saved from the consequences of sin. Why? Because Jesus was punished for the consequences of our sin! He was our substitute! Likewise, we were saved from eternal death and granted eternal life. Yes this is astoundingly Good News because of the astounding Love behind it! It changes everything--or at least it should...
