The renowned preacher John Wesley once said: “I learned more about Christianity from my mother than from all the theologians in England.” John's brother Charles undoubtedly concurred. In 2 Timothy 1:5, the Apostle Paul exhorts his son in the faith: "I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well." (ESV) Paul recognized the Godly influence of these two beautiful souls as they reared Timothy to become the man of God he was destined to become. Whether it be Moses' mother, Jochebed, Samuel's mother, Hannah, or Mary the mother of our Lord Jesus, the Scriptures give us many examples of mothers who revered God, loved their children beyond measure, and taught their sons and daughters to replicate their devotion. One famous preacher from the 1800s who revered his own mom was Charles Spurgeon. Spurgeon said this about all Godly mothers: "You are as much serving God in looking after your own children, and training them up in God’s fear, and minding the house, and making your household a church for God, as you would be if you had been called to lead an army to battle for the Lord of hosts." Amen to that! The truth is obvious: Godly Mothers are a gracious gift from God!
