Astonished at the Majesty of God

Astonished at the Majesty of God

Following the Transfiguration, Jesus encounters a crowd of people arguing with Jewish leaders.  A man breaks from the wrangle and begs Jesus to heal his only son, possessed with a demon since he was very young.  Mark's gospel indicates the demon often threw the boy into fire or water, trying to destroy him, a microcosm of Satan's work in the world.  Jesus casts out the demon and restores a totally healed boy to his father.  Luke 43a says it all: "And all were astonished at the majesty of God."  But then Jesus pulls His disciples aside and says this in the very next verse: “Let these words sink into your ears: The Son of Man is about to be delivered into the hands of men."  Jesus wanted His disciples to know that this little exorcism was a mere preview for the bigger event that was coming, His death and resurrection.  Colossians 2:13-15 now declares our victory in Christ Jesus: "When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, having canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; He has taken it away, nailing it to the cross. And having disarmed the powers and authorities, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross."  And how should such deliverance leave us?  Astonished at the majesty of God!
