To Jerusalem With Eyes Wide Open

To Jerusalem With Eyes Wide Open

In Matthew 5:20, Jesus says: "For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven." (NIV)  When we consider just how rigidly these religious leaders sought to keep the law--even to the extent of tithing the herbs they grew--having a righteousness that exceeds theirs sounds impossible.  That's because it is impossible.  But as recipients of the Gospel we have placed our faith in Christ who imputes to us His very own righteousness.  And His righteousness far surpass that of the Pharisees and teachers of the law.  In our main text, Jesus is on His way to Jerusalem to make this happen, resolutely bound for the Cross, with His eyes wide open.
