What's in Your Handkerchief?
With some notable differences with His Parable of the Talents, Jesus tells the Parable of the Minas in Luke 19:11-27. More than an illustration about money, it's really about our stewardship of all that God has entrusted to us--certainly of things like talents, gifts, and graces--but also of time and opportunities and everything else God gives us in order to advance His Kingdom. That the one servant chose to wrap his single mina in his handkerchief is telling and his lame excuse for his sloth and inactivity are outright embarrassing. That the servants who employed their minas wisely and were rewarded extravagantly surely should inspire us to do likewise with whatever we've been given, investing it in doing God's will, accomplishing His work, and all that for His majesty and glory. But not only is this an exhortation for individual believers, it's perhaps more so an exhortation for the Church and all its varied expressions both big and small. After all, the Church is His brainchild. It's the vehicle, the corporate mechanism, the Royal Family He has marshaled to advance His Kingdom on earth, upon which His throne will one Day come to rest. Therefore, in lieu of all our Lord has entrusted, we must ask one another: "What's in your handkerchief?" And hopefully we can all smile and answer like this: "Absolutely Nothing!"
