The Poor Wealthy Young Ruler

The Poor Wealthy Young Ruler

Matthew, Mark, and Luke all tell about an encounter with a young man who comes to Jesus wondering how to obtain eternal life. Combining the three accounts, we know this young man is a ruler as well as wealthy. After assuring Jesus he's kept all the commandments, Luke 18:22-23 records: "When Jesus heard this, He said to him, “One thing you still lack. Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.” But when he heard these things, he became very sad, for he was extremely rich." (ESV) Unfortunately there was a greater treasure in the young man's heart, an idol. He was offered the opportunity to personally follow the Son of God but instead he goes away sad. Unbeknownst to him, he likewise goes away poor because the greater Treasure was right before him. An even more glaring concern is believing we can earn our salvation through good works, achieving eternal life by our own efforts. We can't! Only Jesus can and indeed He has! 2 Corinthians 8:9  reminds us: "For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sake He became poor, so that you by His poverty might become rich." (ESV) Instead of walking away in sadness, the blessing offered to us is to walk with Christ in immeasurable gladness. This for sure is finding True Treasure...
