Whenever anyone, Christian or non-Christian, claims that something is right or wrong, we should always ask "By what standard?" In other words, what is the source or foundation of their ethical claims? Jesus, when confronting the Pharisees on their arbitrary rule-making, quoted the prophet Isaiah as he addressed the root of their error: “This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me; in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.” (Isaiah 29:13).We should be careful to not make the same mistake as those unrighteous Pharisees. By looking to God's unchanging and eternal word as our standard, the church can shine the light of God's kingdom in this dark and confused world leading many to the truth.
