Ephesians 1:7 declares: "In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace..." (ESV) The short definition of Redemption, means, "to buy back by paying a price in order to set someone or something free." And Redeeming, is the act of achieving Redemption. Colossians 1:13-14 puts it this way: "He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins." (ESV) God sent Jesus not just to accomplish emancipation, but to achieve adoption; not just to free us from slavery but to make us heirs! Galatians 4:4-7 expresses it masterfully: "But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God." (ESV) How awesome is that!
