CloseWhile Matthew and Luke give us the details of Jesus' birth, centuries earlier the OT prophets were giving us hints of the Messiah's coming. Matthew often uses the phrase, "This took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken..." Some of these prophecies of old were buried obscurely in the OT narratives. Often they had an initial or partial fulfillment in Israel's history while looking forward typologically to their ultimate fulfillment in Christ our Lord. These fulfilled prophecies should remind us that God Almighty is sovereign: He had a plan of salvation in place before time began; He never veered off those plans; and He fulfilled those plans completely. While we vaguely know how it all turns out, God knows completely--just like He did when His Son was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, wrapped in swaddling clothes, laid in a Bethlehem manger, and destined for the cross to save us from our sins. Stay tuned for more to come...
