“One Mina Plus None Equals Zero

With His sights still set on Jerusalem, while having just finished a much criticized meal with Zacchaeus, Jesus tells what is now commonly called, The Parable of the Minas. A nobleman prepares to go away to another country to be appointed king much to the chagrin of his countrymen. He calls ten servants together, gives each a mina, roughly three months wages, and tells them to do business with the money on his behalf. Upon his return as king, he summons the servants together to settle accounts. One servant has gained ten additional minas while another has gained five additional minas. These two servants are rewarded with the same amount of cities to govern, ten and five, respectively. But another servant returns his single mina wrapped in a handkerchief laced with poor excuses. He is not only sharply rebuked and called wicked, his mina is taken away and given to the servant who had earned ten. This message seeks to unpack the relevance of this parable with respect to faithfulness and stewardship, especially as it relates to our stewardship of the Message, the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
