Oh Wow! Oh No! & Oh My!

1 Corinthians 1:15-20, believed to be an ancient credal hymn, declares: "He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by Him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities--all things were created through Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together. And He is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything He might be preeminent. For in Him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through Him to reconcile to Himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of His cross." (ESV) As we read Who the Son of God was in His pre-incarnate glory we cannot help but exclaim, "Oh Wow!" As we read of our predicament of sin, our enmity toward God who made us, His wrath against us, and the death that awaited us, we cannot help but cry out, "Oh No!" But when we see what was accomplished by God the Son--Jesus our Lord, the purchase of our salvation with His blood, the forgiveness of our sin, our transformational shift from enemies into friends, we cannot help but sing out with thanksgiving, "Oh My!" Or better yet: "Oh My My My--all glory to His name!"
