CloseBelieved to have been written by the "weeping prophet" Jeremiah, Lamentations is a book of five poems that chronicle the woes of Judah's Babylonian captivity. Yet even the author, who has suffered bitter afflictions himself, maintains hope in God's steadfast love with mercies new every morning--extolling the greatness of God's faithfulness. Despite the "wormwood and the gall" of our own afflictions, losses, and painful ordeals, these same promises are our's through Christ Jesus, powerfully reiterated in Romans 8, assuring us that absolutely nothing can separate us from the unfailing love of God. Though all suffering has its roots in sin, Jesus suffered and died in our place on the cross, declaring there the three most powerful words ever uttered, "It is finished!" Anchored to what Christ has secured on our behalf, we not only walk into this new year with Godly confidence, but into every day henceforth we are privileged to draw breath for the glory of God.
