Psalm 39:4-5 in the NLT says: "Lord, remind me how brief my time on earth will be. Remind me that my days are numbered--how fleeting my life is. You have made my life no longer than the width of my hand. My entire lifetime is just a moment to You; at best, each of us is but a breath." Brevity is a reality whether we embrace it or try and inoculate ourselves against it. For many in our "This-is-all-there-is" culture, the driving goal is living life to the fullest and this is often steeped in unreserved selfishness and hedonistic pursuits. But for believers with eternal hope, life now means knowing, loving, and serving the Lord selflessly. It means loving God and one another in growing measure. It means trusting God every step of the way. We lay our loved ones to rest differently. We reflect on our swiftly passing days thankfully and we press on knowing God has plans and purposes for us to fulfill. This further means we run our races, fight our battles, help those in need, endure difficult ordeals, and get through each day--planted on our knees. And fortunately that is the very place God loves to meet us.
