Ever Needing A Savior

Ever Needing A Savior

In Romans 6:1-2 Paul posits a rhetorical question: "What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it?" (ESV) The NASB puts it this way: "What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin so that grace may increase? May it never be! How shall we who died to sin still live in it?" We must heartily celebrate the fact that Jesus has saved us by grace but we must also celebrate that our Savior's grace sustains us, having a transforming effect on how we now live. We might ask: Are our sins that put Jesus on the cross in the first place continuing or being dispensed with by the same grace that saved us in the first place? Or "shall we keep on sinning that grace may increase?" Should not His grace-filled kindness that led us to our initial repentance be the same grace-filled kindness that leads us in daily, on-going, repentance? Jesus, as our Savior, has saved us, is saving us, and will one day save us in full measure. And this is what makes our Savior and His Grace so humbling as well as amazing!
