Better to Eat Jesus' Words Than Your Own

Better to Eat Jesus' Words Than Your Own

Jesus' words in Luke 6:27-31 come from His Sermon on the Plain: "But I say to you who hear, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you. To one who strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also, and from one who takes away your cloak do not withhold your tunic either. Give to everyone who begs from you, and from one who takes away your goods do not demand them back. And as you wish that others would do to you, do so to them." (ESV) So how do we process and internalize such challenging words? How do we obey them? It's a given that Jesus' words are often misapplied, dismissed as hyperbole, shared with contextual caveats, or run through theological strainers. But sometimes that's liken to watering down the wine. What if we just take them in, unfiltered, let them nourish our souls, and allow the Holy Spirit to transform our minds and hearts? Thankfully Jesus, The Righteous One, not only fulfilled the Law but embodied perfectly everything He taught and commanded. And that is why His sacrifice to appease God's wrath and cleanse us from sin was totally sufficient. May we not only find Jesus' words a feast but let's devour them until our plates are clean!
