At the Feet of Jesus

At the Feet of Jesus

Martha, along with her sister, Mary, and brother, Lazarus, were friends of Jesus. Martha invited Jesus to her house in the Village of Bethany, a couple miles outside Jerusalem. During the visit Martha was doing all the preparations and serving while Mary sat at Jesus' feet listening to His teaching. Martha became frustrated and angry with her sister and sternly asked Jesus to intervene. Luke records Jesus' response: "But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.” (Luke 10:41-42 ESV) How easy it is to get caught up in seemingly urgent concerns while neglecting what's vitally important. Whom or what should usurp sitting at our Lord's feet? Oh that we might cut through the clamoring demands that distract us from His presence, quiet our souls, and take a seat before Him. After all, nothing matters more than Him who matters most.
