Advent and Spontaneity

Advent and Spontaneity

Spontaneity. Some people like that word but it scares others to death. Some find security in "sticking with the plan." Others find adventure in "veering off the beaten path." The plan was to go to Bethlehem and register for the census but did Joseph and Mary plan to have the Baby that far from home? The plan was to get a room at the local inn but having Baby Jesus in a barn seems way off script. Or was it? Is there room in your life for spontaneity? Shepherds didn't plan on an angelic concert announcing their Savior was born in their little hometown--but what a welcome interruption in those starlit fields! What does it mean to walk in Christlike spontaneity? Is it possible to view interruptions as sovereignly ordained appointments? Jesus encountered ten thousand interruptions on the way to the cross to die for our sins. And He took them in stride as though each one was planned. Could our interruptions be planned? What if we were to become increasingly more and more comfortable with our Lord interrupting us anytime He wants to? Jesus' first miracle began with an interruption. At a small town wedding His mother came up to Him and said something like, "Son, I'm sorry to interrupt, but it looks like our friends have run out of wine..."
