The Lord is Our Keeper

The Lord is Our Keeper

Psalm 121 is one of the Psalms of Ascent (Psalms 120-134). Some refer to them as the Songs of the Stairs, believing they were among the songs the faithful sang while climbing the steps to the Temple in Jerusalem. Some believe they were songs sung by Pilgrims headed to Jerusalem for annual festivals like the Feast of Tabernacles or Passover. Still others believe they were the songs the former exiles of Judah sang when returning from captivity in Babylon. Pivotal throughout this Psalm is the Hebrew word, Shamar. It means to keep, to preserve, guard, or watch over. To realize the Lord is our Keeper imparts an enormous sense of security. Jesus always personified His Father's heart and He too demonstrates Shamar. In John 10:27-30 Jesus says: "My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of My hand. My Father, Who has given them to Me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father's hand. I and the Father are one." (ESV) Oh what security as we make our ascent towards glory!
