We aren’t saved by grace without works and then transformed into His likeness by works without grace. The grace that saved us is the grace that sustains us. We are saved and sanctified–both–by the grace of God.

Clear throughout John’s first epistle is his notion that true regeneration, without transformation, makes the authenticity of the supposed regeneration, suspect. The purchase of our redemption and adoption was not cheap. Though it cost us nothing, the ransom paid was the violent death of God’s only Son. This has profound implications for our Christian walk.
