When the Holy Spirit is at work in a church and genuine love for God and one another is real, that’s a pretty sweet fishing spot, the right side of the boat to be casting our nets, the pier from which we want to cast our lines.

A scribe once asked Jesus which was the greatest commandment. In Mark 12:29-31 Jesus answers this way: “The most important is, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’

While Jesus was on the earth, he was, actively, the Light of the World. When he left the earth, he commissioned his followers, his church, to be the light of the world. Believers shine the light by doing justice, loving mercy, and walking humbly with their God.

Jesus certainly has entrusted much to us in terms of talents, gifts, and graces, skills and abilities, time and opportunities. Are we truly engaging in His business? There’s a deepening concern with the church’s diminishing sense of urgency while sinking ever more into a malaise of complacency.

If Jesus’ command for us to love one another isn’t enough, Paul, Peter, and John offer plenty of additional reiterations in their epistles. While suggestions may leave some us wiggle room, commandments do not.

Jesus said “My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” While on the surface it might seem otherwise, in these few brief sentences Jesus declares that extraordinary love will lead to extraordinary joy.

To be a church of relevance we must be a people who faithfully carry out the Great Commission. If we do that, then this new chapel facility should serve us well for many seasons to come. May the Lord sustain us, by His grace, to do His will, accomplish His work, for the glory of His name, in this wonderful place He has generously provided!

1 Corinthians 13 is often referred to as the Love Chapter. Paul juxtaposes spiritual gifts, noble deeds, and Biblical knowledge next to God’s love and summarily dismisses them as annoying distractions whenever engaged without the most excellent endowment of all.
