Can we know true unity? Right now? Yes, but we’ll get in the way of true unity because we’re human beings. However, true God-ordained unity cannot be obtained without human beings.

Our time here is temporal and yet the consequences of the Gospel are eternal for all those who believe. And this seems to be the truth the loins of our minds need to be girded with as we rest our hope on the fullness of God’s grace that will culminate when Jesus returns.

Many of us can remember a time when we failed miserably at something. We may also remember someone who stooped down, entered our mess, just to lift us up out of it. The Incarnation, God the Son takes on human flesh, is all that, and then some, and then a whole lot more.

Just as love compelled Jesus to leave the glories of heaven to come for us, His love at work in us and through us will likewise compel us to leave what’s comfortable in order to bestow comfort upon those in need. Or at least love should have that compelling effect…

With grace and confidence in our Lord, we can pray with thanksgiving and joy for one another, confident that the Lord who apprehended each of our brothers and sisters, is faithfully at work in them and will bring them to that promised place of fruition–all for the glory of His name…

If Jesus’ command for us to love one another isn’t enough, Paul, Peter, and John offer plenty of additional reiterations in their epistles. While suggestions may leave some us wiggle room, commandments do not.

At the Last Supper, just hours before the cross, Jesus talks to His disciples about glorifying the Father, abiding in the Son (The True Vine), bearing fruit that lasts, and abiding in His love. Ten times in this exchange He uses the word, ‘abide.’

The church in Corinth had numerous problems, including, doctrinal error, sharp divisions, snobbish elitism, spiritual pride, gross immorality, lawsuits against one another, and even getting drunk at their Communion love feasts.

Hospitable believers cannot help but reflect the love of our Lord, touch the hearts of others, while causing those same hearts to open wide to the Good News of Jesus Christ. “Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.” (Galatians 6:10 NIV)

Jesus said “My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” While on the surface it might seem otherwise, in these few brief sentences Jesus declares that extraordinary love will lead to extraordinary joy.
