Summary

1 Thessalonians 5:9-10 says: “For God has not destined us for wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us so that whether we are awake or asleep we might live with Him.” (ESV) As many have astutely said, “None of us are getting out of here alive.” And the Scriptures clearly say that death is not the end. Despite our mortal bodies suffering decay and death, our souls will last forever, receiving new bodies upon resurrection. But let’s be clear, because the Scriptures are, not everyone will spend eternity in the same place. In John 5:28-29, Jesus affirms: “Do not marvel at this; for an hour is coming, in which all who are in the tombs will hear His voice, and will come forth; those who did the good deeds to a resurrection of life, those who committed the evil deeds to a resurrection of judgment.” (ESV) Of course faith–genuine faith–or the lack thereof, determines our deeds, both good and bad, and judgment will occur accordingly. There’s a reason the return of Jesus is often described as the Great and Terrible Day. It’ll be both, depending on where you stand…
