While Jesus was on the earth, he was, actively, the Light of the World. When he left the earth, he commissioned his followers, his church, to be the light of the world. In the Sermon On the Mount, Jesus told his disciples “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven” (Matthew 5:14-16). In scripture, light has two functions; in a positive sense, light shows the way by illuminating the path forward. Negatively, light exposes darkness. Followers of Jesus can take, as their marching orders, the encouragement given by the Old Testament prophet Micah, “He has shown you, O man, what is good; And what does the Lord require of you But to do justly, To love mercy, And to walk humbly with your God?”  Micah 6:8.
