In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus said, “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (Matthew 6:19-21 ESV) In a different setting, recorded in Luke 12:32-34, Jesus reiterates similarly, telling us where we are to accumulate our treasure and that’s of course not here. The bottom line issue comes down to trust in God for what we need and helping to meet the needs of others in the meantime. Sometimes we shift our trust to what we possess in the way of earthly treasure (all of which came from God in the first place) and consequently transfer our trust away from God. We also sometimes assume what’s been given to us is exclusively for us. But what God often gives isn’t meant for keeping but for distributing. And doing that generously is a matter of trusting God immensely. But no one is more TRUST-worthy than our Lord and His promises to care for us can be taken to the bank. So where is your treasure and in whom do you trust?
