Psalm 126:5-6 says: “Those who sow in tears shall reap with shouts of joy! He who goes out weeping, bearing the seed for sowing, shall come home with shouts of joy, bringing his sheaves with him.” (ESV) This is not only what God’s exiled people experienced when they returned home, this is what we’re called to do when all we can seemingly do is weep and cry out to God. When we’re broken, crushed, torn up inside, inconsolable, writhing with pain, the Wonderful Counselor encourages us sow seeds, even while our tears are falling! No one exemplified Psalm 126 more perfectly than Jesus when He went to the cross! Hebrews 12:2 affirms: “Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” (NIV) And what was the joy set before Him? How did He return Home with shouts of joy? How was His mourning tuned into dancing? By your restoration to God the Father! And one Day, when our feet strolling the grounds of the new heaven and earth, our mouths will be filled with laughter and our tongues with joyful shouting! Oh what a Day of rejoicing that will be!
