Summary

Colossians 3:17 says: “And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.” (ESV) Colossians 3:23-24 follows a few verses later: “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.” (ESV) ‘Whatever you do’ implies doing something. So what are you doing in the name of the Lord that honors Him? Glorifies Him? Are you driven by consumption or production? As a believer are you merely taking in and filling up or are you spilling over, going forth, serving, helping, giving, doing? Clearly our lives in Christ begin with “Done.” Jesus has accomplished on the cross what we could never have accomplished by strenuously trying to keep God’s law and earning our own right-standing. But as we stand on and build on this foundation of Done, love-inspired and joy-driven thanksgiving should ignite fires in us for doing. “Be ye not mere hearers of the Word but doers…” So once again the question begs an answer: What are you doing?
