Summary

Matthew 5:14-16 from the Sermon on the Mount: “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” (ESV) There was a race run throughout Ancient Greece called the Lampadephoria. The race was run at night with all the runners bearing lit torches. But the winner of this unique race was not the one who crossed the finish line first but rather the one who finished first with his torch still lit. May we be blessed to run our races in such a way that we cross the finish line with our torches blazing, that great cloud of witnesses cheering, our Father smiling–and all this to the honor and glory of His name! 1 Timothy 1:17 should affirm our hearts: “To the King of the ages, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.” (ESV)
