We talk often about Christ’s suffering and what He accomplished on the cross. He took our guilt upon Himself and died in our place. The physical suffering He experienced was horribly intense. So terrible was the rejection He endured that Jesus cried out “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Mark 15:34) But one rarely discussed aspect of the pain Christ bore was the intense shame He felt; the writer of Hebrews noted that while on the cross Jesus was “despising the shame.” (Hebrews 12:2) What is the meaning of this unusual statement and why is it important for us to know?
