1 John 3:11 says, “For this is the message that you have heard from the beginning, that we should love one another.” (ESV) John and his fellow apostles heard Jesus share similarly at the Last Supper; John 13:34-35 says, “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” (ESV) John’s not talking about the emotional syrupy kind of love but rather an unimaginable form of love the Greek renders Agape/Agapao. It’s characterized by selflessness. It manifests with actions. It’s undeserved. It’s committed to the highest good of another. This kind of love prompted the Father to send His Son. This type of love prompted the Son to crawl upon the cross for us. In 1 John 3:15-16 we see a stark contrast: “Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him. By this we know love, that He laid down His life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers.” (ESV) To paraphrase, “Haters gonna hate but y’all love one another!” There’s nothing easy about that. Lord, please help us!
