Summary

Psalm 143 is a lament, another worship song of desperation from a man crushed in spirit and surrounded by enemies. A song like this could not have been sung well without tears. Perhaps you’ve been there? Maybe you’re there now? Ultimately our psalmist’s cries are answered at the cross that Jesus bore, where our sins were wiped out and our vicious enemies were defeated. In Christ, our thirsts are quenched, our spirit’s made alive, and mercy wraps its arms around us. To find ourselves in this poet’s place would not be unusual. It would, in fact, be normal. And when we find ourselves there, Jesus’ superb invitation will prove even sweeter music to our ears: “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30 NKJV)
